West Coast Woman

Last year, to no one’s surprise, Sarasota Orchestra’s Anu Tali graced WCW’s cover (along with more than a few area publications). Tali is now into her first full season as Artistic Director at the Sarasota Orchestra and doing great.

But...did you know we have another female conductor here on the west coast of Florida? Her name is Robyn Bell and she’s been leading the Sarasota Pops Orchestra for four years. Robyn’s a busy woman as she’s also the Director of Instrumental Studies and Assistant professor of Music at State College of Florida.

As I mentioned last year at this time, female conductors are very rare. But in our area, we have two. It’s also interesting that The Pops Orchestra was started in 1975 by a woman – Arlene Stein. Now that is all pretty cool. The Pops’ season starts in December so check them out some time – they perform in rotation in both Sarasota and Bradenton.
